Ma’had Al-Zaytun or Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School (Ponpes) is a boarding school located in Mekarjaya village, Gantar sub-district, Indramayu district, West Java province. This Islamic boarding school is an effort of the Indonesian Islamic Boarding School Foundation (YPI).

With claims belonging to Indonesian Muslims and other nations in the world and also Al-Zaytun claims to be an educational institution that arises from the people, by the people and is intended for the people with the motto “Educate and build solely for the worship of Allah.

This Islamic boarding school began its construction on August 13, 1996. The initial opening of learning was held on July 1, 1999 and the general inauguration was carried out on August 27, 1999 by the 3rd President of Indonesia, BJ Habibie.

Recently, the Al-Zaytun Islamic boarding school has become a public conversation. The reason is that this Islamic boarding school has spread teachings that are not in accordance with Islamic law.

The reason is that during the implementation of the Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri prayer where the rows of male and female congregations were equal, there was even a female congregation who stood alone in front of the male congregation.

Recently what has gone viral on social media is the singing of Jewish songs sung by the students.

Al-Zaytun has received significant attention and controversy over the years for many reasons.

Academic Accreditation Al-Zaytun has faced criticism for not having official academic accreditation from Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture. Critics argue that without proper accreditation, the education provided may not meet the requirements of the standard.

There were allegations of financial mismanagement within the institution. It was reported that the funds collected from donations and student fees were not accounted for properly, this led to suspicions of misappropriation of funds.

The militant tendencies of some individuals associated with Al-Zaytun have been associated with radical and extremist ideologies. The school has been accused of promoting a conservative and strict interpretation of Islam, which has raised concerns about the potential radicalization of its students.

The lack of transparency has drawn criticism that Al-Zaytun lacks transparency in its operations and finances. The school was accused of not providing clear information about the source of its funding and expenses, giving rise to suspicions of illicit activity.
